Why Terpene Profiles Vary
Using Terpene Information When Browsing
If you've ever noticed that different cannabis products smell dramatically different — piney, citrusy, earthy, floral — that's largely due to terpenes. Understanding what they are and how they're used in product information can help you navigate the menu more confidently.
What Are Terpenes?
Terpenes are naturally occurring aromatic compounds found in a wide range of plants, including cannabis. They're responsible for the characteristic scents and flavors associated with different strains and products. They're not exclusive to cannabis — you'll find terpenes in lavender, citrus peel, pine needles, and many other plants.
Aroma and Flavor
Different terpene profiles produce dramatically different sensory experiences. A strain high in Limonene tends to have a bright citrus character. Myrcene is earthy and musky — common in many cannabis varieties. Pinene smells like pine forests. Linalool is floral, similar to lavender. These aromatic differences are among the main reasons experienced cannabis consumers pay attention to terpene profiles.
Common Cannabis Terpenes
Some of the most frequently encountered terpenes in cannabis include: Beta-Myrcene (earthy, herbal), Limonene (citrus, bright), Alpha-Pinene (pine, fresh), Beta-Caryophyllene (spicy, peppery), Linalool (floral, lavender), and Terpinolene (floral, fruity). Each batch of cannabis has its own terpene composition, which is why two products in the same category can smell and taste very different.
Why Terpene Profiles Vary
Terpene content varies based on the strain, growing conditions, harvest timing, processing, and storage. This is one reason why cannabis products can have notably different aromatic characteristics even when they come from the same general category.
